Throwing the book at bullies

KINGSMEAD – New book gives children practical tips to resist meanness and bullying.

Educational psychologist Jo Hamilton has written a hands-on guide for youngsters to help them resist and avoid bullying.

The Ultimate Assertiveness Toolbox for Kids aims to develop assertiveness, foster independence and boost self-confidence.

“The kids who are frequently picked on at school often aren’t aware of how their own behaviour aggravates the problem,” Hamilton said. “And as parents and teachers, we don’t always know how best to help and advise them. I hope this book will change that.”

The book is the result of a workshop that Hamilton ran for children. It was during these workshops that she realised children who had trouble in developing assertiveness skills needed more than the standard four-step strategy that was often offered to combat bullying.

“Adults who work with children bank on the approach that tells you to walk away, ignore, talk it out or seek help,” said Hamilton. “These are good tools, but they aren’t enough to suit every situation for every kind of kid.”

The book provides 20 different tools with instructions on how to use each approach, when to use it, and things to look out for. Hamilton’s assertiveness programme is a tried-and-tested formula. “The kids love this programme,” Hamilton said. “Each kid has their favourite tool, the one that works best for their personality and circumstances.”

The book will be launched at Kingsmead College on 2 March at 5.30pm. Hamilton will be in conversation with a panel of specialists, including Dereck Jackson, Nikki Bush and Sister Ann Richardson.
