A group of Saheti Grade 12 life sciences learners, accompanied by their teachers, recently explored the world of tertiary studies.
This was during a visit to various facilities in the Biology and Chemistry Departments at Wits University.
In the Microscopy and Microanalysis Unit, the learners learnt about sophisticated techniques including electron microscopy.
While in the School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences, the learners were shown the basics of plant tissue culture.
Moving to the Chemistry Department, they gained knowledge of analytical chemistry with the use of chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
A highlight of the tour was a visit to a lab in the School of Molecular and Cell Biology, where the learners had a discussion with PhD students on various techniques used in the field of molecular biology. Valuable insights were gained into disciplines of scientific research at university, and possible career choices in the sciences.
