R10 000 fine for driving under the influence of alcohol and defeating the ends of justice

JOBURG – Driver ordered to pay R10 000 fine by Johannesburg Magistrates' Court.

Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court ordered Makumbani Tinyiko to pay a R10 000 fine for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Tinyiko was arrested by a Metro police officer for driving under the influence of alcohol during a stop-and-search operation on the corner of Albertina Sisulu and Allum roads in Bruma on 24 January last year.

According to the spokesperson for Cleveland Police Station, Captain Johan Jordaan, the Metro officer stopped a blue BMW as it had no front number plates.

“However, when the vehicle stopped it suddenly had front number plates. The Metro police officer then saw that the car was fitted with a remote control device that can hide the registration plate and when necessary open it again,” Jordaan said.

“It is against the law to hide registration number plates. The officer arrested Tinyiko. He then discovered that Tinyiko was also under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to Cleveland Police Station and later assigned to Detective Sergeant Melita Masango for investigation.”

Jordaan commended Masango for her hard work in this investigation.

Details: Cleveland Police Station 011 677 5783.
