Malinga sets the record straight

KENSINGTON – Government subsidy for home not enough

A post has been making the rounds on social media about the Strathyre Girls Home in need of donations as the home has allegedly not received its subsidy from government for the past nine months.

The EXPRESS spoke to the administrator, Major Naomi Malinga, who stated these rumours are not true.

“It is not true that we have not been receiving the subsidy from the government for the past nine months. We have been getting our subsidy like always but it is not enough to cover all the costs,” said Malinga.

She said the community has responded positively to requests for donations and assistance at the home.

“The record needs to be set straight because such issues can cause problems for the home,” Malinga said in response to the rumours.

The girls’ home is one of the caring ministries of The Salvation Army.

Its primary function is to provide a secure, caring and loving home environment in which the children’s past hurts are addressed and where a spirit of hope for the future is encouraged and nurtured.

“The home receives a monthly subsidy from the government for each child. The money received from the government is not enough to run the home. We still need donations to cover other budgetary shortfalls.

“The community has been very supportive with donations and that goes a long way,” Malinga said.

The home currently houses 54 girls ranging from three to 18 years old.

“I would like to thank the community for supporting us and being there for the home. Thank you to Ward 118 Councillor Neuren Pietersen for helping the home. We also thank the companies and organisations that have donated to us, including Eskom Rotex Industries, Aliyah Kadr, the Rotary Club of Bedfordview, Remax and Kensington Lions Club,” said Malinga.

The girls’ home is planning to be part of the Kensington Spring Fair this year and hopes the community will support them.

“We have applied and are waiting to hear if we can be part of the fair. We are planning to sell second-hand clothes and toys. We ask for the public to support us because this is part of our fundraising,” explained Malinga.

She said anyone who would like to donate clothes or toys to the home are welcome.
