Elphin Lodge and Ron Smith Care Centre did their bit to mark Arbor Week on September 1 when they planted an evergreen tree.
Arbor Week is celebrated in South Africa from September 1 to September 7 each year to highlight the essential role trees play in sustainable development and the livelihoods of people and their environment.
Ephin Lodge and Ron Smith Care Centre marked this day by planting a Leucosidea Sericea, commonly known as Ouhout in Afrikaans or Old Wood in English.
The tree was donated by Servest to the Elphin Lodge Complex.
According to Andrew Muntswu, the Servest site manager overseeing work on the complex gardens, the tree’s bark is reddish brown, very rough. old looking and peels off in strips.
