Eleven suspects were arrested while they were busy with illegal mining and the processing of gold bearing sand.
Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said police confiscated the equipment the suspects used to process the raw material, as well as the gold bearing sand.
He said the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
“The case will be investigated by the Cleveland SAPS and follow-up operations are planned to get rid of this problem,” he said.
Jordaan said the management at the station will do everything in their power to stop all forms of crime and will ensure proper investigation in all cases.
“Together we will fight crime with all policing organisations in the area,” he said.
