The City of Joburg’s executive mayor announced that yesterday the Hawks and CoJ’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) Department, arrested an ANC councillor from the Kaalfontein, Midrand area, for the alleged illegal sale of two city owned property stands. An employee, working at the Social Development Department in Region A, was also arrested.

In a statement issued by the office of Clr Herman Mashaba, it is stated the stands were sold for a total of R210 000.
“Investigators allege that money from the illicit transaction were paid into the employee’s bank account, who then transferred the money to the councillor,” Mashaba stated.
They will appear in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court today on charges of fraud and corruption.

In a statement issued by the ANC Greater Johannesburg Region’s it is stated that at its integrity committee meeting on September 26, the branch was made aware of allegations of the illegal sale of land by the councillor.
“At the integrity committee meeting the councillor was given an opportunity to present his case and after deliberations by the committee, it was found that the councillor’s actions were morally and ethically unacceptable,” said Jolidee Matongo, head of ANC Joburg Communication.

“The ANC’s Integrity Committee resolved that the regional executive committee should immediately recall the councillor from his position as an ANC Councillor. The ANC Greater Johannesburg Region has thus taken a decision to remove him as a councillor with immediate effect,” said Matongo.
The mayor appealed to anyone with information on the illegal sale of stands and RDP houses to come forward.
