Reddam House Grade 10 learners started the year by exercising the joy of giving through the Santa Shoe Box Project.

This initiative delivers Christmas presents containing some of the bare essentials, as well as a few treats, to underprivileged children,
Each box contains clothing, a face cloth, a toothbrush, toothpaste, educational supplies, a toy and sweets.
In an attempt to surpass the record of 188 boxes delivered in 2016, the learners started the year by working hard to raise funds at every possible opportunity.

Funds were raised at inter-house gala events and on sport and cultural days. Many raffles were organised and friendship bracelets were also sold.
Despite being confronted by a couple of economic challenges, the project was a massive success because numerous boxes have been pledged and assembled.
“However our Reddam students’ efforts did not just stop there. A team of highly dedicated Grade Nine learners slaved tirelessly – every spare moment they had before, during, and after school saw them personalise boxes. Because donors are able to pledge their box to a specific child, the scholars ensured the names were creatively decorated on the side of each box. Never before had the accounting classroom seen such devotion, festivity or quite so much glitter,” said Stephanie Cartwright, a Grade 10 learner at Reddam.
The learners took great pleasure in delivering 273 completed boxes to the Santa Shoe Box collection point in Alberton.
“A selection of learners will be privileged enough to hand deliver the checked boxes to the children themselves after the exams – they are ecstatic at the prospect of seeing the results of their hard work.
“It is the hope of the ‘elves’ that more and more families will get involved in this worthy cause, so that in time, we will all be the change we want to see in the world,” she said.
