2. UPDATE: UK tourist left battered after assault by metro police officer in Edenvale
An elderly couple was left shaken and battered after their encounter with an EMPD officer. Mr Sean Rowely*, visiting SA from the UK, was allegedly assaulted on March 12 by an EMPD officer after he was pulled over by the officer’s female partner.
3. ALERT: South African Weather Service issues a warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of Gauteng
Several warnings were issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) this year urging the public to take note of severe thunderstorms, hail, heavy downpours and strong gusty winds. On October 27 Saws predicted heavy downpours resulting in possible urban flooding.
4. UPDATE: 57-year-old man shot FOUR times in Bedfordview
Bedfordview SAPS confirmed a man (57) was shot four times in Bedfordview on September 12. A 57-year-old man was shot in the parking area of KFC Bedfordview near Bedford Centre.

6. Metro Cops arrested for assault on UK tourist are released on a warning
EMPD spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago, confirmed that the two officers implicated in the assault on a UK tourist in Edenvale on March 12 were released on March 28. “They were both released on a warning,” Lt Col Kgasago then told the NEWS.
7. One of six arrested in BEDFORDVIEW leads SAPS to safe house in Kelvin
One of six suspects arrested in Bedfordview on November 22 led police officers to a safe house in Kelvin, where officers seized five handguns, an R5 rifle, three stolen vehicles and jewellery.
8. Daughter pays tribute to her father – a known Bedfordview dentist
On Sunday, May 21, the Bedfordview community was devastated by news of the death of well-known dentist, Dr Hermanus Gerhardus de Wet. The late dentist was married to Gail de Wet (53) for 30 years and they have two children, Christopher (28) and Natalie de Wet (25). He was Dr de Wet to many, but to his daughter, he was daddy.
9. Department of Education investigates Edenglen High learners’ conduct in park
Concerned community member Joyce Wilkinson claimed Edenglen High School learners were engaging in unruly behaviour at a local park. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) then launched an investigation into the allegations.
10. Body of man (77) found inside his Edenvale home
The body of a 77-year-old man was found by his brother-in-law on September 27 inside his house on Palliser Road in Edenvale. He had been beaten and strangled. The deceased was also the victim of two residential burglaries.
