Toastmasters hold fundraiser for St Giles

DEWETSHOF– Toastmasters give back to St Giles.

Egoli Golden Toastmasters Club hosted a fundraising night at St Giles Home for the physically challenged in Kensington on January 23.

The theme of the night was ‘Igniting the Spark for St Giles’ and the event even attracted residents from Edenvale.

The night was filled with fun and games.

A game of bingo, guess what with 20 questions and storytelling were just some of the activities enjoyed by guests.

Toastmasters raised R889 for the night which was donated to St Giles.

“We are grateful to Toastmasters for this beautiful night and donation.

Dianne Hasapis from St Giles receives the money raised during the night from Egoli Golden Toastmasters Club’s treasurer Mark Eifler.

“It will assist the home to buy the everyday necessities and allow us not to dip into our savings,” said Dianne Hasapis, residents’ social support at St Giles.

Toastmasters club member Richard Francis thanked Mediterranean Fish Centre in Malvern and Pick n Pay Darras Centre for the donation of refreshments.

Supporting a good cause are Edenvale women Marinda Bekker, Chrissie Hasapis, Tanya Van Rie and Jovan Bevie.

Toastmasters is an organisation that was formed in California in 1922 by a member of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Ralph Smedley.

The purpose of the group was to enhance the communication and leadership skills of the youth at the time.

Anyone from the age of 18 years old can join the club.

The club meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at St Giles from 7pm to 9pm.

Sandra Copper (Toastmasters past district director), Richard Francis (Toastmasters member), Joy Stander (Toastmasters area director) and Michelle Yenson (president of Egoli Golden Toastmasters Club).
