Johannesburg East SAPS Cluster recovered firearms and a stolen car at Kwa Mai Mai hostel on January 25.

Spokesperson for Jeppe SAPS Captain Richard Munyai said police received a tip-off about a silver VW Golf 7 with two occupants carrying a firearm at Green and Durban streets in Jeppestown. “Police proceeded to the given address. Upon arrival they [the police] did not find the car.

“While they [police] were patrolling they spotted the car at Kwa Mai Mai hostel. The car was parked among other cars with no one inside,” he said.

Munyai said police looked inside the car and saw a black bag lying on the back seat and an AK47 rifle between the front seats.
“They opened the car and searched the plastic bag. They found another two rifles with five magazines loaded with ammunition.
“Upon investigation it was discovered that the car had false registration numbers. The car was reported as hijacked at Temba SAPS in June last year,” he said.
Munyai said the car was impounded and the firearms seized by Jeppe SAPS.
No suspects were arrested.
“We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward by calling the SAPS,” he said.
