Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, said people must make sure their gates are locked at all times to prevent criminals from gaining entry into their homes. “We received a report that a house was robbed in Esther Park while the owner was working in the garden.

“He left the gate open and did not see when the men entered. While working in the garden he heard a noise coming from the house and went to investigate,” Tsotsotso said.

“As he was about to enter, he saw a man in the house. One of the suspects pulled him inside the kitchen. The other suspect started assaulting him, left him lying on the floor and told him not to move. After a few minutes the owner of the house got up, but the suspects were gone. They took some appliances and fled the scene.”

Tsotsotso issued the following safety tips:

• If you are working in your garden, lock the gate at all times.

• Do not throw boxes of appliances out in the street as this attracts criminals. Rather put them in plastic bags.

• Do not put too many refuse bags outside the gate, because criminals might assume you have plenty of money.

• Neighbours must be alert and report any suspicious characters.

If you want to report a crime, you can contact the Sebenza SAPS on 011 400 6000 or 079 694 6324.
