No slowing down for these senior citizens
“Hiking is a lovely activity, not only do you keep fit but you also get to enjoy nature.”

As we get older many senior community members look forward to the idea of retirement, sitting at home and taking a well-earned rest.
One group of community members trying to change that way of thinking is the Continuity Club.
The club was formed in 1980 and its members believe that retired individuals should keep active and fit.

Elizabeth Ogilvie, a committee member of the club said the club caters for hikers and walkers in the greater Johannesburg area.
Some members of the club live in Edenvale, Bedfordview and the West Rand.
“Although there are gyms and park runs for retirees, people who attend them often go straight home afterward,” said Elizabeth.

“The club gives retirees the opportunity to interact in a social environment with like-minded individuals.”
Elizabeth said the club encourages members to participate in activities at their own pace.
“As you get older it is important to stay healthy and active,” said Elizabeth.

Activities which the club hosts include hikes in Gauteng and across South Africa.
Elizabeth said members offer suggestions of where to hike at the clubs bi-monthly meetings.
She said many of the hikes take place during the week.
Membership will cost those interested R30 a year.

The membership fee contributes towards the cost of hikes in other provinces.
