Cansa Shavathon – Raising funds for a good cause
“I am participating today to help my community. It always feels good to give back.”
The Keurboom Care Home based in Belgravia held a Cansa Shavathon at Park Meadows Shopping Centre on February 24.
The aim of the event was to raise funds for the home.
“The funds will be used to support and sustain the home,” said chairperson of Cansa Keurboom Care Home’s liaison committee Sandi van Tonder.
Shoppers were encouraged to shave or spray their hair for a good cause.
The shaving or spraying of the hair is seen as a sign of solidarity with cancer survivors.

“One of the common side effects of undergoing chemotherapy is hair loss,” said Sandi.
A Kensington resident Michael Ribeiro said he is a supporter of cancer awareness campaigns.
“I shave my hair at least twice a year to show my support. Today I chose to spray my hair,” he said.
Rand Aid Private College learners were the stylists for the day.

“I have a good working relationship with the school. The school always help us when we have events. I contacted one of the teachers, Jenna Eagar, who organised the youngsters from the school to help me on this day,” said Sandi.
The deputy head girl of the school, Boikanyo Mphomane, said it has always been her pleasure to give back to the community.
“I am participating today to help my community. It always feels good to give back,” she said.
The home is a sanctuary for cancer patients going through treatment.
Sandi thanked the community for the support they had shown during the day.
“I am grateful for every donation that people contributed. The community has been very supportive of the event,” she said.
