Elandspark School in Bedfordview was recently entered into the 2017 Ekurhuleni North District Enrichment Awards.
The event was held at the Kempton Park Civic Centre.
The school was entered into the categories for learners with special educative needs (LSEN) school of the year, best coach of the year, best female athlete of the year, and best male athlete of the year.
The school came out on top and was selected as the LSEN school of the year for 2017.
The jJudges in the competition looked at a number of aspects including the school’s achievements during the 2017 academic year.

In rugby the school won the Golden Lions League in the u-13, u-14, u-15 and u-16 categories, as well as the titles for the second and first teams in the same league.
The u-13, u-14, u-16 and second teams were also the winners of the North Vaal Rugby League.
Eleven rugby boys were chosen for the Golden Lions Craven Week team and received provincial colours.
Two rugby boys were chosen for the SA LSEN team and received national colours.
In netball four of the school’s teams qualified to participate in the Gauteng Championships. The u-15, u-16 and u-19 teams won the Netball Jomo Region LSEN League, while the u-16 team received a bronze medal in the Gauteng Championships.

Two girls were chosen for the Gauteng team and received provincial colours.
In cross-country, seven of the school’s athletes were selected to represent Gauteng at the SA National Championships.
Thembilihle Mhlongo won the u-15 Individual League trophy and Mazizi Mpolongwane won the u-16 Individual League trophy at the SA Schools Championships.
Elandspark School also won the Inter Schools meeting in 2017.
Ten girls and eight boys were selected to represent the Gauteng athletics team at the SA LSEN Championships in KwaZulu-Natal.
The u-13 soccer team won the Central Region and Gauteng League, while the first team were the Central Region and Gauteng and North Vaal winners.
Three u-19 soccer boys were selected for the Gauteng team and received gold medals during the National Schools Championships in Durban.
Five u-16 soccer boys were selected for the Gauteng team and received bronze medals at the national tournament held in Cape Town.

Four u-19 soccer girls were selected for the Gauteng team and received silver medals at the National Schools Championships in Durban.
The Elandspark cricket sides also performed well in 2017, with five boys selected for the Gauteng cricket team.
JC Grobelaar was chosen for the SA LSEN cricket team and received his national colours. In addition, the u-14, u-16 and first teams were Gauteng League winners.
The school’s u-17 and u-19 chess teams won the Gauteng LSEN Chess League.
Five players were selected to participate in the national chess tournament held in Boksburg.
The school’s swimmers received 22 medals at the Gauteng Championships.
A total of 220 learners also participated in the Eisteddfod.
