Retirement home turns 50-years-young

"The residents who decorated their hats did a good job of it."

To mark the start of Edenhaven Retirement Home’s 50th birthday celebrations the home recently hosted a Mad Hatters Jubilee and Tea Party.

The Jubilee and tea party was held at the home on March 23.

In the weeks leading up to the tea party, residents from the home were encouraged to decorate their own hats for the party.

On the day of the party, residents showed off their handiwork while enjoying the morning with each other.

“The residents who decorated their hats did a good job of it,” said Careen Bosch, a committee member of the home.

Prizes were given to residents who had the best decorated hats.

During the home’s year-long birthday celebration it will host a number of fund-raising events.

Two initiatives planned so far include a golf day in June and a winter fete in July.

Careen said the home is also considering hosting a masked ball and a music concert.

Funds raised during the year will be used to upgrade the facilities at Edenhaven.

“We want to improve the home for its residents,” said Careen.

Some improvements the committee are hoping to do include:

• Making the bathrooms more wheelchair and walker friendly.

• Renovating the bathrooms.

• Repairing the ceiling and roof of the home.

• Replacing chest freezers for the home’s kitchen.

“The building was constructed over 50 years ago; it is time to upgrade,” said Careen.
