Jeppe SAPS needs help from communities to find relatives
“We often struggle to get hold of the deceased’s family. We have cases where tenants die and the landlords have no information on who to contact to make death notifications.”

Jeppe SAPS appealed to landlords to have information about their tenants.
“This appeal from the SAPS comes as a result of challenges faced by the police when someone dies,” said spokesperson for the station, Capt Richard Munyayi.
“We often struggle to get hold of the deceased’s family. We have cases where tenants die and the landlords have no information on who to contact to make death notifications,” said Munyayi.

“In most instances the landlords don’t even know the relatives of their tenants. They end up seeking assistance from us. In many other cases the deceased would be found dead in their rooms and we open cases of murder or inquest but find it difficult to trace their families or relatives.”
“The police then need the help of the media to assist them in tracing the family. This is very helpful because in many cases the family come forward and identify the deceased but if no one comes forward to claim the body, some people end up being buried by government as paupers,” he said.
Munyayi said the tenants are also advised to give information to the landlords.
