Fire engulfs shacks at Jumpers Informal Settlement
Yet another fire breaks out at Jumpers Informal Settlement
The recent fire that broke out at Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland was caused by a faulty stove, forensic investigations revealed on November 12.
It is not clear how many shacks were affected by the fire.
At least 75 people, among them children, were displaced, Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told the EXPRESS. He said some people were treated for smoke inhalation on the scene.
“There were four people who were treated on scene for smoke inhalation. However, no persons were injured,” said Mulaudzi.

“Relief efforts to provide food for the displaced were also held before those affected were transported to a nearby emergency shelter.”
Mulaudzi said people need to err on the side of caution when using heating implements such as stoves, heaters or candles.
“These are the most common causes of fires at informal settlements. People need to be extra cautious when handling them,” Mulaudzi noted.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said numerous fires at the settlement have been reported in the past, with the latest fire bringing the count to four or five for this year. No criminal charges have been filed.
“The fire was caused by a faulty stove, but I cannot comment on how that could happen,” said Jordaan.
“In addition, a criminal case has not been opened pertaining to this incident.”
