#IMadeMyMark: Useful tips for those long queues
Tips for sun protection on the day you make your mark.
May 8 is fast approaching and preparation is key.
According to Shawn Herbst, media liaison officer of Netcare 911, most emergency reports on Voting Day are related to sunburn and dehydration.
Tips for sun protection on the day you make your mark are:
• Do not be fooled by cloudy weather as you can still get sunburn from sun rays, even when it is cool and cloudy.
• Wear appropriate head protection, like a wide-brimmed hat, and eye protection that meets all safety standards for exposure to sun rays.
• Eat food that contains a significant amount of water, such as watermelon, oranges, grapes and peaches.
• Cover up with loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to provide the best protection from the sun.
• Always use a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) when going outdoors.
• Take extra care of children and the elderly as they are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and dehydration.
• Limit sun exposure as much as you can.
• If you have been in the sun for a long time take a cool shower to bring your body temperature down.
