Heritage talk with James Ball

The talk will cover the highs and lows of building the Heritage Portal, while reaching out to South Africa's heritage community.

James Ball, founder and editor of the website Heritage Portal, will give a village talk during Heritage Month on September 19.

The talk, themed Heritage Matters, will take place in the Modderfontein Town Hall at 7.30pm.

It will cover the highs and lows of building the Heritage Portal, while reaching out to South Africa’s heritage community.

James will also present ideas on how to get the heritage sector working.

“James has an obsession with old buildings and their history,” said Robbie Vermont, secretary of Modderfontein Conservation Society.

After a stint in the corporate world, he took a leap of faith and returned to study history at Wits.

After graduating with an MA he founded the Heritage Portal.

During the day he lectures history at a leading Cambridge School in Johannesburg.

He is also the co-founder of The Heritage Register, a database of property-specific heritage information for Johannesburg, and the Heritage Monitoring Project, an organisation which tracks South Africa’s most endangered heritage sites.

Visitors are welcome to attend the talk.

An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses.
