Time to lace up for Edenvale-based NGO’s Nappy Run™

"This year the campaign hopes to raise enough funds to purchase 55 000 nappies."

Community members are invited to lace up their running shoes and take part in the annual Nappy Run™ fun run.

Organised by Edenvale-based National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), the event will be held at Johannesburg Zoo on November 2.

The running event will coincide with National Children’s Day.

The Nappy Run™ campaign started on October 3 and will end on December 3 (International Day of Persons with Disabilities).

Participants can run, walk, wheel or stroll the five kilometres around the zoo.

It will start at 7.30am, an hour after registration opens at 6.30am.

Tickets can be purchased from the Nappy Run™ website and will cost R60 for children and R100 for adults.

The Nappy Run campaign hopes to educate the public on the violation of the rights of children with disabilities.

Started in 2011, the run forms part of the NCPD’s observation of South Africa’s Disability Rights Awareness Month, November.

André Kalis, the council’s specialist in policies and children’s matters, said the campaign is a response to the mandate of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, both of which the South African Government is a signatory to.

It hopes to raises funds, through online donations, which are used to purchase nappies for children with disabilities.

“This year the campaign hopes to raise enough funds to purchase 55 000 nappies,” said André.

“The nappies will then be provided to children with disabilities around the country.”
