Mustang Club gives Steven’s Ability Centre a day to remember

Steven’s Ability Centre is situated on 28A Nicol Street, Bedfordview.

The Mustang Club Gauteng gave members from the Steven’s Ability Centre in Bedfordview a drive in Ford Mustangs as part of a fund-raising effort.

The event was held at Brakpan Airport on October 20.

Event organiser Ana Luis said inspiration for the fund-raising event came from Jorge Simoes, CEO of Otima Plastic and Mustang Club Gauteng member.

Jorge Simoes, Aidan from Steven’s Ability Centre, who has Costello syndrome, and Ana Luis.

“Jorge wanted to do something special for the members of Steven’s Ability Centre and being part of the Mustang Club Gauteng. He thought they would really enjoy a day out in Ford Mustangs, which then turned into a fund-raising effort for the centre,” said Ana.

She said Mustang Club Gauteng members were escorted by Dicing Stars Biker Group and Bikers Against Bullies as they drove in a convoy to the airport.

Steven Dos Santos, whose mother Vanessa Hawkins Dos Santos started the Steven’s Ability Centre and named it after him.

“Once at the airport, the youngsters were taken on rides in the Mustangs. The delight on their faces was plain to see,” said Ana.

Donations for the event were sponsored by Bedfordview residents Nella Luís and Claudio Gaspari, Brad Bennett, Dicing Stars, Mustang Club Gauteng, Aermart Air Conditioning in Edenvale, RSA Group and Fonso’s Bakery in Kempton Park.

Steven’s Ability Centre offers a safe space for young different-abled adults in Bedfordview and is a non-profit organisation that relies mostly on contributions from parents and donations to keep its doors open.

The centre recently relocated to bigger premises in Bedfordview to become a full-day facility, thereby incurring substantial costs.

Ana said funds raised through the event will assist the centre in meeting some of these costs.

She said the centre also has beautiful Christmas creations made by the Steven’s Ability Centre on sale, to assist in raising funds.
