Jeppe girls recognised for hard work

The guest speaker was Dr Judy Dhlamini, chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand.

The Jeppe High School for Girls 2019 matric class held their valediction ceremony recently and learners celebrated their academic successes with family and friends.

The guest speaker was Dr Judy Dlamini, chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand.

Dr Dlamini has degrees from Natal, Wits, Unisa and Stanford University.

After practising as a medical family practitioner for many years, she specialised in occupational health and moved into business.

She is an entrepreneur, author and philanthropist. Her passion is creating and adding value to society and humanity.

She is the founder and executive chairperson for Mbekani Group, which celebrated 20 years in business in 2016.

She is a non-executive director of SA SME Fund, an initiative between government and the private sector to create jobs and grow an inclusive economy.

She is the former chairperson of Aspen Pharmacare (Aspen), a JSE-listed South African pharmaceutical manufacturer and distributor, and has been on the boards of Anglo American PLC, Discovery Holdings, and Woolworths Holdings. She is a published author of Equal but Different, which was a best-seller for several weeks.

She was selected as the 2017 Exclusive Books Homebru author in the business sector. She is the recipient of the African Economy Builder Lifetime Achiever Award for 2016.

The award recipients included:

• Mbali Ncube was awarded the Rotary Cup for exhibiting a willingness to shoulder responsibility, leadership, the desire to be an example to others in dress, speech and conduct, an understanding of the reasons why school rules are made and a willingness to insist in their being observed and an appreciation and acceptance of good citizenship.

She was nominated for this award by her peers. She was also awarded the subject prize for design and the Editor’s Trophy and was recognised for being a top 10 academic.

• Kezia Reddy was awarded the prize for scholarship from Jeppe Quondam as the top academic learner, the subject prizes for life sciences and geography and was recognised for being a top 10 academic. Kezia was also awarded the Dinaledi Trophy for being the Grade 12 learner who best exemplified the ethos of Jeppe sport, which is “to be the best that I can be” in spite of limitations. The award is for service and fidelity to the school with regard to participation in sporting events. She was also one of the members of the Athletics Team Award.
