Every child needs help to develop social skills.
Librarian at Murray Park Library Edith Khuzwayo (48) established Soul Buddies when she identified the need for children to develop skills to deal with pressure.
“I have always been touched by the well-being of children. They often need support when they encounter challenges.
“Children need more attention to assist their development of social life skills to ensure they succeed,” said Edith.
It was never Edith’s intention to start Soul Buddies.

“But my passion for children made me realise this was the right thing to do. It was needed.”
When she started at Murray Park Library in 2012, attendance was low.
“It was worrying me to see how children in the area were not concerned about or cared for coming to the library.

“A library is where children get involved in positive things at a young age.
“Children are close to my heart. They go through a lot while they are still in their teens, and parents are not aware of that.
“I formed the social club for them to be able to pour out their hearts on issues they go through every day. I wanted to let them know, that in times of going through challenges I am there to guide them,” said Edith.

She wanted to be a social worker growing up, but due to financial difficulties she was only fortunate to go and study to become a librarian.
“The Soul Buddies group was a perfect platform for me to get close to the children.
“We engage on social issues and have fun with competitions.”

Soul Buddies held its year-end function on November 16 and certificates and give-aways were handed out to members of the group.
“I just wanted to show them and their parents how much I adore and appreciate them. We showed off their hard work in the group and showcased their determination.”
