Humphreys hopes for clean governance in 2020
Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys recalls a few of the core issues Bedfordview has faced in 2019.
Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys reviewed core issues in Bedfordview in 2019.
Humphreys said RAG Better Bedfordview is a positive community development initiative with regular clean-ups.
“A nominal amount is paid into a Section 21 account monthly; allowing employment of local homeless people to assist with area clean-ups. Stormwater drains are cleared, pavements are weeded and cleared, streets are swept and illegal posters are removed,” said Humphreys.
She said the fund relies on economies of scale with more residents paying, the more Better Bedfordview can do.

Humphreys said Better Bedfordview also received a donation by Village View Shopping Centre of tools.
With informal recyclers in Bedfordview, Humphreys hopes for a transfer station where recyclers can sort and manage their collected material, without having to push their trolleys for long distances.
Humphreys said sewage is at critical level. “Plants are not able to cope, other treatments need to be considered,” said Humphreys.
She apologised to residents for traffic congestion on Harper and Concorde roads, along Riley Road bridge, with the installation on traffic lights earlier this year.
“These traffic lights created congestion. Our town has grown but our roads haven’t. There is no space to make them bigger,” said Humphreys.
Humphreys sees City of Ekurhuleni Land Use Scheme (CELUS) as a potential threat to Bedfordview.
“Recently metro has produced CELUS in its draft form, which was put out for public participation. It includes the intention to fast track applications for spaza shops and taverns in residential one area. Should this aspect of the CELUS not be reconsidered, it would surely be the death knell of suburbs like Edenvale and Bedfordview,” said Humphreys.
Humphreys said Gillooly’s Farm is considered for development of botanical gardens.
She also hopes for conservation of biodiversity in areas such as the Bill Stewart Nature Reserve.
