Community to honour slain cyclist
“When I called back it was not Meckson but another person who informed me that Meckson had been killed.”
Countless messages of condolences were posted on social media following the death of Malvern resident Meckson Luhana.
Meckson, a 32-year-old husband and father who lived in Malvern, was killed on Greenstone Drive when a vehicle struck him
He was killed on the morning of February 5.
Posted on Facebook, messages of condolences and well wishes for his family were shared by the community.
Some posts included;
• “This is so sad. All he was doing was trying to get to work.” – Claudia Themistocleous.
•“People are reckless and have no regard for other people using the road, absolutely disgusting. RIP.”- Sharon-Rob Thomas.
•“How absolutely awful. The family must be so devastated.” – Sherri-lee Smith.
One of Meckson’s employers, Jacqui Strydom, owner of Bambini pre-school and after-care described Meckson as a humble person.
“On the day Meckson was killed, me and my mom both received phone calls from his phone call.”

Jacqui said when she heard the news, she was very shocked.

She left work shortly afterwards and went to the scene.
“I don’t know what I was going to do but I needed to go.”
Jacqui said Meckson who started working for the school and her friends was committed to helping the school.
She explained that the day before Meckson was killed, he was working at the school.
“I can still picture him parking his bicycle at the school.”
Jacqui said the rest of the school’s staff were also upset.
To honour Meckson, the school hopes to create a memorial garden which it hoped to start on February 11.
Community members who wish to honour Mekson can leave flowers at the pre-school’s gate.
Additionally, the school will host a collection drive for Meckson’s daughter who lives in Malawi with her mother.
The donations will be handed over to Meckson’s uncle, Brave Ngoma.
