As the year comes to an end phase three of the upgrades to Horwoods’ Farm recently got underway.
The upgrades, which started roughly three weeks ago, will see the dam and existing water system in the park expanded, gabions and gabion mattresses installed and walkways installed.
Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart said the third and final phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
“It will be nice, community members will be able to go for walks and have picnics around the dam and enjoy the birdlife while doing so.”
Hart said the main portion of the park where the newly constructed skatepark, parking lot play area and existing homestead are, are in the final phases.
“The final contractor and the team are mopping up some of the last items to do and some of the other contractors need to return redo the lawn and some of the lights.”
Other items which still need attention include weeding and a general clean-up of the park.
She hopes with the completion of the main portions of the park community members will be able to once again enjoy the park and make use of it once again.
Speaking on the homestead Hart said she is saddened to see what has happened to the heritage site, however, she said the municipality does have a plan for it.
“The real estate department of the municipality is looking at all possible options for the property,” said Hart.
“Although many of the homeless lived on the island at Horwoods’ Farm we will try to assist them to the best of our ability in relocating them.
“They will be given options,” said Hart.
Going forward Hart hopes the park will be maintained by the Friends of Horwoods’ Farm community group and the funds generated by the entrance fee to the Horwoods’ Farm Family Market.
She hopes to put in a petition with the municipality for the FOHF adopt the park in the coming months.
