Bedfordview community steps up

Henry hoped that the new lighting would put an end to crashes at night.

Community Facebook page I Love Bedfordview teamed up with the Bedfordview CPF last week to illuminate the new traffic circle on Riley Road.

On Tuesday last week, admins of the group posted an appeal for R5 000 to purchase and instal industrial grade LED flashing reflectors around the circle.

The group announced that it had joined the BCPF for the project and that admins had already pledged R1 000 toward the project.

Chairperson of BCPF Gavin Henry told the NEWS that without proper lighting, the circle was a danger to motorists.

He added that since installation of the circle started, five cars had been written off after colliding with the unlit structure at night.

“Together we asked for assistance and BMW Bedfordview stepped up to the plate with the R5 000 needed for the lighting,” Henry said.

The funds raised were used to buy solar-powered flashing amber and red lights.

“They light up the area like a runway and has made the circle far more visible during the night,” he said.

Henry hoped the new lighting would put an end to crashes at night.

“The circle was a good idea because it is a great deterrent for speeding motorists and aids traffic flow from the office park,” he added.

Henry also encouraged residents to support initiatives led by the BCPF which aim to keep the suburb safe.
