Local students represent Gauteng

The athletes brought home 12 medals: five gold, one silver and six bronze.

Eleven members of the Goju Kai Ekurhuleni Karate Academy recently represented the Gauteng Karate Federation at the Karate South Africa Children, Cadet and Junior National All-Styles Championships in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal.

Many hours of training were spent in preparation for this tournament. The athletes brought home 12 medals: five gold, one silver and six bronze.

The championship enjoyed a record number of entries, and the competition was fierce and of a high standard.

This tournament was also a selection tournament to choose teams which will compete at international events in Southern Africa and the WKF African continental championships (UFAK).

By medalling at this tournament, the karateka have improved their chances of making these teams and earning their Sascoc-approved national colours.

AJ van der Merwe was awarded a silver medal for cadet boys kata, while Gabby Toweel received a bronze medal for girls 12 to 13 kata.

Connor Hundermark walked away with gold medals for boys 12 to 13 kata and boys seven to 13 team kata.

Cristiano Coelho received a gold medal for boys 10 to 11 kata and Mathew Soares was awarded bronze medals for boys 12 to 13 kata and kumite.

Tyler Kabali-Kagwa was the recipient of a gold medal for boys seven to 13 team kata and a bronze medal for boys 12 to 13 kata.

Phumelele Ngwenya won a gold medal for boys seven to 13 team kata, while Chloe Keartland walked away with a bronze medal for girls 10 to 11 kumite, and Mikayla Alves received a bronze medal for cadet girls kumite.
