BFS foil major business robbery in Kempton Park

Six suspects were arrested and unlicensed firearms were recovered during a foiled business robbery on Saturday.

This comes after members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) received information about the possible robbery.

“At around 09:00, members were briefed by Johannesburg District Crime Intelligence on a possible robbery that would take place at a retail store in a Kempton Park convenience mall,” said Grant Giblin, spokesperson for Benoni Flying Squad.

“Members put an operational plan into action and were placed in strategic positions in the area.

Benoni Flying Squad members arrested six suspects in Kempton Park on October 1 on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunitions and attempted murder, respectively.

“At 13:30, members were alerted that the suspects’ vehicle, a silver Nissan Almera, was around the mall.

“As members responded they received updated information that the vehicle was proceeding along Monument Road towards Kempton Park CBD.

“The Almera with five suspects inside was tactically confronted on the corners of Monument Road and Palm Avenue.”

Giblin added that unlicensed firearms were also recovered.

“The suspects were ordered out of the vehicle and a thorough search was conducted,” said Giblin.

“Three unlicensed 9mm pistols with serial numbers removed and 32 live rounds of ammunition were recovered inside the vehicle.

All five suspects were immediately arrested and the vehicle was impounded.

Six suspects were arrested in Kempton Park during an alleged foiled business robbery. The suspects are being put inside the police vehicle.

“The members are commended for averting a potentially dangerous robbery and situation in taking down armed suspects without harm to anyone and no shots fired.”

Captain Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson Kempton Park SAPS, said the sixth suspect, allegedly linked to the five suspects, was arrested at a different location.

“While still on the scene on Monument Road and Palm Avenue, one crime intelligence officer received information that one suspect was spotted at the corner of Monument and Rietfontein roads,” said Mtshali.

“On arrival, it is alleged the suspect tried to shoot at the officer but the officer managed to shoot at the suspect on the upper body and he was taken to hospital for treatment under police guard.

“The suspects were detained pending their appearance in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunitions and attempted murder, respectively.”

The Kempton Park SAPS acting station commander applauded the Benoni Flying Squad and Crime intelligence for their swift response by preventing a business robbery.
