Wasps hosts fun open day

Wasps open day turned into a community fun fair.

Prospective players were allowed to join the Wasps Rugby Club Edenvale when the club held its open day on February 19.

The eventful day was held at Edenvale High School with a surprise visit by the Lion’s Mufasa.

Community members were treated to a variety of fun activities ranging from jumping castles, market stalls, and food stations as well as coaching workshops.

There was also a fun competition where the participants won club-branded caps.

Operations manager Cheryse Kruger said they want new players to join the best club in the area.

“The club has been running for 12 years and has enjoyed great outcomes.

“We have good coaches who are well equipped, and we offer personal coaching for specific training,” she said.

They train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the school from 17:30 to 18:30.

“Those who would like to join can visit us on our training days where they can register. Our game days are on Saturdays for those who would like to come and support us,” she added.

They have U6 to 18 groups and a seniors group from 19 years to 39.

Angelique Matthee, the mother to 15-year-old Daniella who has recently joined the club, said, “Rugby is something she likes so we encourage and support it all the way.

She has been playing rugby for about six years. She played a bit last year for East Rand United as they were the only team that sported a girl’s division.

“We joined Wasps as we have heard a lot of good things about them.”

Another new player Daniel Mbuyamba said he was looking forward to making new friends and new challenges.
