EMPD urges caution after pedestrian dies in R24 collision

A man was fatally struck by a vehicle on the R24, prompting renewed warnings about pedestrian safety on highways.

A collision on the R24 East just before the Edenvale off-ramp saw a pedestrian killed at about 05:45 on May 23.
The EMPD’s Freeway Patrol Unit attended the incident.

According to EMPD spokespeople, officers on routine patrol received notification of a car accident involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the lifeless body of an unknown man aged between 18 and 35, struck by a white Toyota Corolla.

The driver was unhurt and assessed on the scene.

Authorities reiterated the dangers pedestrians face on high-speed roads like the R24, where unauthorised crossing often results in severe or fatal accidents.

“Pedestrian fatalities remain a major concern on our freeways.

“We strongly urge the public to use designated pedestrian bridges or cross only at marked safe zones,” said an EMPD official.

The deceased’s identity has not yet been confirmed, and investigations are ongoing.
