Leak on Van Riebeeck Avenue repaired but watery pit remains

The leak was caused by the water main along Van Riebeeck Avenue being badly eroded.

After 21 days, the CoE repaired a water leak outside a Van Riebeeck Avenue business.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said they repaired the leak on August 1.

Although they addressed the leak, the pavement still needs to be repaired.

With the leak in front of Dyno by Quint, the Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS was made aware of it by Carol Claassen after it had started two weeks prior.

When the leak first started, water and soil seeped through the pavement bricks and flowed down the avenue.

The water leak on August 1 before it was repaired.

However, over time it created a watery pit because the soil eroded and the paving bricks collapsed into the hole.

Claassen and a staff member measured the hole to find it was 1.5m deep.

The hole has grown bigger since the NEWS visited the business.

According to Dlamini, the badly eroded water main along Van Riebeeck Avenue caused the leak.

“The city suspects the pipe might have been leaking for some time, and soil was washed into the stormwater system or another service sleeve.”

Dlamini said the city needed to replace a section of the affected pipe.

“This will be completed before the end of this month.”

The Van Riebeeck Avenue site after it was attended to by the City of Ekurhuleni.

He said once repairs were complete, the team would reinstate the paved area when they were ready.

Following repairs to the water leak, officials barricaded the repair site with tape.

Dlamini said the city would ensure the site was safe for pedestrians.
