Bedfordview SAPS meet residents to address concerns about crime

Elandsfontein and eMabondeni residents said they are fed up with crime.

This was during a community engagement meeting with the Bedfordview police on January 17.

The meeting provided a platform for open dialogue to address concerns and form a partnership with various stakeholders to create a safer environment for all.

Residents expressed concerns regarding alleged corruption within the ranks of the local police force, the pumping of diesel from trucks and illegal dumping, selling of drugs at schools as well as domestic violence amongst other challenges.

“Trucks parking on our streets to illegally pump diesel is a huge problem. We see different kinds of trucks coming in and out but nothing is being done about it.

“The CPF choose not to do anything about it while some police officials are ‘friends’ with these culprits,” said resident, Thulani Khoza.

Another resident Purity Masondo said they are living in fear as residents are being attacked by criminals on their way to work.

“The community doesn’t feel protected,” she stated.

Another challenge that was tabled is the tempering of electricity cables, which has previously left residents without power for weeks.

Bedfordview acting station commander, Sinothi Ndaba, said it was worrisome that police officers are being implicated in some of these crimes.

He encouraged residents to report these incidents.

“Trucks and diesel pumping is a big problem but we cannot fold hands and say it is fine. We have to fight back,” said Ndaba.

He urged the residents to work together with law enforcement.

“Crime will not come to an end if the community doesn’t help the police and continues to hide these criminals. Tuck-shops not closing on time is also a problem that we have to look at.”

Another resident Patrick Mthwa questioned why the police are not using their intelligence to root out crime.

Mthwa said telling on criminals puts people’s lives in danger.

Ndaba said there are plans in place to combat crime in Elandsfontein and eMabondeni, which will be implemented in the coming weeks.

He urged residents to refrain from buying stolen items and encouraged them to join the CPF patrol team.
