Local youngsters prepare hard for upcoming sporting events

“I clocked 12.4s, and with those results, I managed to qualify for the SAs. My goal is to secure a scholarship once I complete my matric. I want to continue my athletics career overseas."

Ameenat Fagbemi and Meagan Hamilton have qualified to compete at the South African Schools Championships.

Both athletes train at the Germiston Stadium under Germiston veteran and coach Stephané Kotzé.

Fagbemi is a 17-year-old learner at Edenglen High School.

She hails from an athletic family with her mother, a former athlete, and grandfather who was also active in sports.

She competed in the 100m and 200m during the CGA’s first league meeting. She came first in the short distance.

“I clocked 12.4s, and with those results, I managed to qualify for the SAs. My goal is to secure a scholarship once I complete my matric. I want to continue my athletics career overseas,” said Fagbemi.

“I want to become a geologist, like my father who is qualified in this field.”

Hamilton is a Grade Nine learner at Dr EG Jansen and has ambitions of becoming a marine biologist.

Hamilton competed in the 300m hurdles.

She started competing at primary school when a teacher spotted her talent. During the same year, she competed at the SAs and claimed second position.

“I clocked 45.5s to qualify for the SAs and I want to be in the top three. My mother used to be an athlete,” said Hamilton.
