Motion to remove Ekurhuleni Mayor filed by ActionSA

The motion will now serve before the council's programming committee, and once approved, will be tabled at the February council meeting.

ActionSA has submitted a motion of no confidence against Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana and his team of MMCs in a ‘bid to save Ekurhuleni from the brink of collapse’.

“Since his election, with the help of the ANC, EFF and others in March 2023, service delivery and the city’s financial standing have deteriorated.

“Nothing functions properly, and service delivery has become a dream,” said ActionSA caucus leader Siyanda Makhubu.

“We have been a vocal opponent to Ngodwana’s disastrous tenure as mayor, which saw the EFF join the city’s political leadership for the first time.

“It was clear that Ngodwana was installed as a compromise between the ANC and EFF, and we cannot idly sit by and watch as he fails to govern,” said Makhubu.

Siyanda Makhubu, ActionSA City of Ekurhuleni caucus leader said they want to save the city from the brink of collapse.

He alleged that under Ngondwana’s leadership, the city’s finances deteriorated, with cash on hand at record lows.

Service delivery came to a halt because they did not pay service providers, and the waste crisis continues to plague communities.

“The mayor failed to implement the lifestyle audit and the council resolution on hijacked buildings, which continue to pose a health and safety risk for residents.

“The critical MMC positions occupied by the EFF, which are important service delivery portfolios and the critical finance portfolio, have systematically brought service delivery to a halt and failed to implement fiscal controls.”

Makhubu also accused MMC of Finance Nkululeko Dunga of not submitting the auditor general’s report to the council on time.

“This is a basic pillar of good governance which allows councillors as elected public representatives to assess the state of the city’s finances and determine whether ratepayers’ money is spent correctly,” said Ngodwana.

The motion will now serve before the council’s programming committee, and once approved, will be tabled at the February council meeting.

A media inquiry was sent to the mayor’s office with a request for comment.

“The mayor will not comment because nothing has been confirmed; it is only an application for now,” his office stated.
