Sewage from Elandsfontein not affecting Shelton Avenue Park – CoE

“The city is unaware of any pollution affecting the Buurendal attenuation dam but will investigate the matter.”

Contrary to the belief of Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro, the CoE said sewage from Elandsfontein is not draining into Shelton Avenue Park’s stormwater system.

The city said because of this, the Elandsfontein sewage cannot be polluting Shelton Avenue Park.

This comes in response to a media enquiry sent to the city regarding concerns raised by Guerreiro in April about the stench of sewage in the park and the lack of stormwater servitude maintenance in the area.

Guerreiro said the Shelton Avenue Park servitude and the Buurendal attenuation dam are sporadically maintained, resulting in vegetation growth and the accumulation of debris.

Although no sewage from Elandsfontein reportedly flows into Shelton Avenue Park, CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the city attended to several sewer blockages in Isando.

He said it could be that the Isando blockages caused the pollution in the canal.

In response to reports of pollution at the attention dam, Dlamini said investigations are underway.

“The city is unaware of any pollution affecting the Buurendal attenuation dam but will investigate the matter.”

Addressing the matter of maintenance, Dlamini said the city does maintenance and clears vegetation at the servitude and attenuation dam when the need arises and the budget allows.

He said budget constraints have prevented work from being conducted at either site.

However, Dlamini said a project, which will see the sites maintained and cleared of vegetation, is planned for the second quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.
