Always listen to your instincts – Edenvale SAPS

“In the event of an emergency, the sound may scare off a would-be attacker or alert others to the scene.”

To create a safer community, Edenvale SAPS urged the community to be street-smart.

Providing the community with a variety of safety tips, Edenvale Police Station’s communications officer Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile urged residents to be as vigilant as possible.

“Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts because they are usually right,” he said.

“If you think you’re in an area you shouldn’t be, you probably shouldn’t be there.”

He said it is important to know where you are going, especially in an unfamiliar neighbourhood or when it is dark.

“Use well-travelled, well-lit areas and avoid shortcuts through alleyways and parking lots.”

Be prepared

Mashile encouraged community members to always have a safety plan in place.

“Decide where you would go and what you would do if a dangerous situation occurs.

“Know where the nearest police station is located, how to contact the police in the event of an emergency and what establishments are open should you need to take refuge.”

While walking through Edenvale Mashile advised community members to walk with confidence and at a steady pace.

“Keep your head up, observe your surroundings, and don’t look down at the ground.”

To immediately alert others to an emergency Mashile suggested that residents carry a whistle or similar type of noisemaker.

“In the event of an emergency, the sound may scare off a would-be attacker or alert others to the scene.”

Exercising

Mashile told those who make use of Edenvale’s roads to stay healthy and in shape. He said runners and cyclists should frequently vary their routes, exercise in groups and avoid isolated areas.

“Do not wear headphones or listen to music while walking in public.

“This can distract you from being aware of your surroundings and who may be approaching you.”

Less could save more

To prevent the loss of valuables, residents are encouraged to keep purses, wallets and packages hidden or tucked securely between their arms and body.

“Don’t overload yourself with packages and bags as they are distracting and can make you look defenceless.

“Don’t carry a large amount of cash or numerous credit cards, and avoid wearing flashy and excessive amounts of jewellery.”

While at the ATM, residents should use caution and rather use ATMs located in well-lit, busy areas, and stated that auto tellers located in shopping centres are usually safest.

Mashile told community members that if they are a victim of crime, they need to call the SAPS emergency line on 10111 or SAPS Crimestop on 086 001 0111.

“Edenvale SAPS and their stakeholders, Edenvale CPF and private security companies are here to assist and create a safe Vale.”
