Knowing who to contact and what to do in an emergency is essential for any community member.
Knowing this information could save you and your loved ones from a dangerous situation.
Recently Edenvale Community Police Forum shared information detailing the procedure for requesting assistance.
Depending on the emergency, police, paramedics or firefighters may be needed.

• The nature of the emergency.
Describe the situation accurately by providing as much information to the authorities; this could be a vehicle collision, a medical emergency or a crime being committed.
• The location of the emergency
Be as detailed as possible when explaining where the emergency is to first responders
Include the address, street names, and identifiable landmarks and how to access the site or property.
If access to the location is in a complex, estate or block of flats, inform security personnel of the situation and if possible have an individual guide first responders to the scene.

• The number of people
When reporting the emergency identify how many people are affected and what condition they are in.
This information is important so that emergency services know how many resources need to be sent to the scene.
If there are injured victims, provide basic details of their conditions, if they are breathing, what their pulse is, if they’re on medication and whether or not there are life-threatening injuries present.
• Providing a contact number
Before the call ends, ensure that you provide your name, surname and telephone number so that emergency personnel can contact you again in case the call is disconnected.

When authorities arrive ensure that you obtain a reference number.
• Assess the situation
Do not put yourself in harm’s way, before providing any assistance ensure that you are safe to do so.
Assess the possible dangers which could put you in danger too.
When first responders arrive do not interfere, let them conduct their duties.
