Edenvale police warn locals of theft out of vehicles

“The police requests the public adhere to and implement safety measures to help curb this crime.”

Following an increase in reported cases of theft out of motor vehicles, the Edenvale SAPS urged community members and motorists to exercise caution.

Edenvale SAPS communication officer Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile said the SAPS has noticed with concern the increased number of reported incidents of thefts out of and from motor vehicles.

He said with the festive season fast approaching, the community must be cautious.

“The police request the public adhere to and implement safety measures to help curb this crime,” said Mashile.

The advice provided includes:

• Not leaving firearms in the vehicle when you park it.
• Ensuring all doors and windows are locked once the car is parked.
• Storing valuable items like laptops, handbags, shopping bags, cash and cameras in the locked boot.
• Parking in well-lit and secure areas at night.
• Using areas with parking attendants or added security or parking in well-populated open areas.
• Not leaving your keys in the ignition.
• Removing detachable radios and the radio’s face when leaving the car.
• Installing alarms and anti-theft devices.

Other advice included that motorists must be aware of people approaching their vehicles.

“The person might inform you that you have a flat tyre, intending to steal items they saw inside the car.”

He encouraged motorists to always lock their doors and keep the windows closed, especially when driving in town.

Lastly, Mashile advised motorists not to use cellphones while driving unless they have a hands-free kit. He said using a phone while driving could lure criminals to your vehicle.
