Residents thilled by annual Carols by Candlelight

Thembalami Care Centre’s and Max Ordman Deaf Association’s annual Carols by Candlelight event was made even more memorable thanks to a heartwarming gesture from Thornhill Manor Retirement Village.

Thornhill donated 120 gift bags to Thembalami residents, bringing smiles and festive cheer to all.

Karen Griessel, Thornhill Manor’s social worker, and Vicky Keenan, a Thornhill resident and retired occupational therapist, joined the celebration at Thembalami.

“Our heartfelt thanks go to Thornhill’s Chapel Committee for their generous monetary donation and to all Thornhill residents who contributed goods for the gift bags,” said Karen.

“The bags were filled with treats that brightened everyone’s day and warmed their hearts.”

The residents were serenaded by Roy Edwards, whose Christmas carols brought joy to the gathering.

Everyone joined in the singing, fully embracing the festive spirit.

“A special thank you to Roy, who always supports us and holds a special place in his heart for Thembalami,” said Elize Raath, the care centre’s deputy manager.

Thembalami’s occupational therapy (OT) team also added to the festive atmosphere by decorating the hall, creating a colourful and cheerful setting.

Another highlight of the day came when caregivers, OT staff, and Thembalami’s nursing services manager, Paulina Namo, danced for the residents.

Many residents even joined in, creating a moment of pure joy and connection.
“Caregivers are true angels,” Karen said.

“They provide not only assistance and support but also companionship, often becoming like family to those they care for.

“During Christmas, a time that can be lonely for many in care settings, small acts of kindness can make a big difference in making someone feel loved and remembered,” said Karen.

Karen emphasised the special bond between Thornhill Manor and Thembalami.

“Over the years, Thornhill has reached out to Thembalami to build an inclusive, caring relationship,” she said

“We’ve invited their residents to join us for Alzheimer’s awareness events, occupational therapy sessions, and social gatherings, strengthening this connection.”

Elize expressed her gratitude to Karen, Vicky and the Thornhill community for their generosity and kindness.

“You are truly our Thornhill Angels,” she said.

“The residents were delighted by the gift bags and didn’t expect such a wonderful surprise. It truly made their day.”

Thanks were also extrended to Michelle Cooke for the beautiful Christmas cake she donated this year, as well as to SPAR Lyndhurst that came to enjoy the event and brought scones for the residents.
