EDITOR’S COMMENT – The St Francis Veterinary Hospital in Modderfontien responded as follows to a letter published in the June 25 edition of the NEWS titled, Residents rescue concussed kitten.

We refer to the letter written by Mrs Patti Webster.

On Tuesday afternoon, June 3, a young teenager presented a kitten which was showing severe neurological signs; the little kitten was examined and given basic shock treatment.

We asked the teenager to call her mother who was standing outside the practice, so that we could inform her of the severity of the situation, offer options for care, and obtain proper instructions.

The teenage girl took the kitten, left the practice, and she and her mother did not return.

We treat injured stray animals on an almost daily basis, support numerous charities and we were more than happy to treat the little injured kitten, but required guidance from Mrs Webster as her daughter is a minor.

St Francis of Assisi guides our compassion, which is constrained by the ethical and legal requirements. We dedicate our lives to assisting animals and their owners.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
