Reader surprised by local talent

I was blown away as they began playing their hour-long set, not only by the talent of each and every member at their respective instruments, but also at the way the carried themselves, professionally.

EDITOR – Over the weekend, on Friday evening to be more exact, I attended a music festival at St Benedicts College in Bedfordview.

I had heard about the festival through the school and I was surprised to hear that they had booked acts like Mi Casa and Rodger Goode and I was interested to see if they lived up to the hype.

Although they performed very well, I couldn’t say that it was my cup of tea; I wanted something more to the tune of rock music.

This is when I came across the high school band Stasis, consisting of Mathew Nijland (lead guitar), Alexander Nweke (bass guitar), Cyngen Bekavac (drums), Storm Theobold (keyboard) and Damain Joseph (vocals and rhythm guitar), based out of Edenvale.

I was blown away as they began playing their hour-long set, not only by the talent of each and every member at their respective instruments, but also at the way the carried themselves, professionally.

The band even managed to write and perform many totally original songs with guitar and drum solo’s that drew even bigger crowds then acts later on in the night.

These people are only 17 years old and already they are performing at a near-professional level. I would even go as far as to say that they are trying their best to bring rock and roll back to South Africa, and to the world again.

Although it is not my intention to slander the music of today, I would say it is so refreshing to have young people take an interest in a real instrument, and to have them play it with passion and style.

The band will be playing a set at St John’s College at their festival “On the Night” on the October 12.
