Tournament attracts over 100 bowlers
The tournament will run for six weeks and is for people who have played the sport for less than three years.
The second week of the 37th Tower Novices Bowling Tournament took place at the Italian Bowling Club on January 25.
“We had 160 entries for the 37th Tower Novices Bowling Tournament, of which 120 were men and 40 were women. The tournament was played on a knockout basis and all districts were welcomed,” said convenor Mr Gustav Aspelling.
“The tournament will run for six weeks and is for people who have played the sport for less than three years. So everyone in the tournament is pretty much on par, they are all learning. The tournament has been great so far and the contenders have responded very well to it. The entries have increased over the years from 60 to 70 and now the competition boasts 120 entries, with people from Potchefstroom, Deneysville and other parts of South Africa taking part,” said Mr Aspelling.
“I have been running the tournament for 15 years and I love it because it is a competitive learning curve for the entrants because you play a game then you mark. You learn a lot when you mark because people ask you questions,” said Mr Aspelling.
The tournament started on Saturday, January 18, and will continue each Saturday morning through to the finals on Saturday, February 22.
