Gold and silver medals for Goju Kai Karate School

Mathew Soares, Gabriella Toweel, Arnoldus van der Merwe and Stefan van der Merwe were selected for the Gauteng all-styles development team, after winning medals in their respective divisions at the Gauteng all-styles development trials, held earlier this year.

Four members of the Goju Kai Bedfordview Karate School won medals at the recent Karate South Africa national all-styles development championships held in Durban on August 24.

Mathew Soares, Gabriella Toweel, Arnoldus van der Merwe and Stefan van der Merwe were selected for the Gauteng all-styles development team after winning medals in their respective divisions at the Gauteng all-styles development trials, held earlier this year.

In the national all-styles development championships, Mathew Soares won gold in the boys 10-11 kata division while Arnoldus van der Merwe won gold in the boys 12-13 under 55kg fighting division.

Gabriella Toweel won silver in the girls 8-9 over 30kg fighting division.

Stefan van der Merwe won silver in boys 8-9 over 30 kg fighting division.

“The national development championship is designed to nurture new, up-and-coming karate talent, so that they can improve their skills and ultimately gain entry into the elite divisions of Karate South Africa.

“The four athletes have also been selected to represent the Gauteng Goju Kai provincial team which will compete at the SA Goju Kai Nationals in Port Elizabeth at the end of September, where they are expected to do well,” said coach Russell Sim.
