How to pack for a stylish bush getaway
Planning an exciting bush getaway? Here’s how to pack for this time of year.
Winter is one of the nicest times to go to the bush in South Africa, but it’s hot in the day and very cold on night and morning game drives so you need layers. Here’s how to pack for a stylish bush getaway at this time of year.
- Colour coordination is everything; muted natural tones like khaki and olive green.
- Layering is essential in autumn and winter. Ideal pieces are a long sleeve shirt in linen or lightweight cotton, a cashmere sweater, a scarf or a throw to wrap around your neck or on your legs.
- Pack a beanie and gloves in bush colours in case it gets very chilly.
- Cargo-style pants in khaki or olive green, especially if you plan on walking in the bush.
- The perfect bush hat should have a wide brim in either felt, straw, leather or canvas.
- A leather lace-up boot just above the ankle; this can be worn with shorts or pants. There are also some fabulous Veldskoen ranges available for men, women and kids.
- A bathing costume and cover-up; days can get very hot.
- A poncho for sitting around the fire at night.
- Sunglasses are essential: think classic tortoiseshell.
- A canvas bag you can take on game drives with your binoculars and bird books.
