Watch: Mother giraffe’s desperate fight to protect newborn

A newborn giraffe’s first steps turned deadly in Kenya’s Masai Mara, as it faced a lioness, a hyena, and tragic missteps.

Getaway Magazine reports a newborn giraffe’s first steps quickly turned into a life-or-death struggle when it encountered a lioness and a hyena.

Filmed in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy of Masai Mara, Kenya, wildlife photographer Don Heyneke and safari consultant Rustom Framjee witnessed a newborn giraffe, barely 30 minutes old, fighting for survival.

From the outset, the vulnerable calf had to dodge relentless advances from the lioness as its mother desperately tried to shield it. The intense pursuit led them to a riverbed, where a tragic twist unfolded: The mother accidentally knocked her calf down a cliff, leaving it stranded.

Despite her determined efforts to protect it and the calf’s brave attempts to rise after each attack, the journey ended in heartbreak, with the newborn succumbing to exhaustion. This powerful footage offers a sobering glimpse into the raw, unforgiving nature of the wild.
