Boksburg Rugby Club reflects on a successful year

A highlight for the Owls was play in the 2020/21 Makopano Covid Memorial Cup.

The Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club (BRC) recently reflected on 2021 during its AGM at Prince George Park.

According to Rinus van der Linde, BRC chairperson, the spillover from the total lockdown from 2020 to 2021 must have been the most devastating event experienced by rugby and contributed to the downfall of many organisations, in particular, rugby clubs.

“Fortunately, Boksburg Rugby Club with the will of many, we managed to keep our heads above water for now. A special thanks goes out to the 2020 management committee, it was not easy.

“The Valke Rugby Union was also not spared from Covid-19 and was summoned by SA Rugby to suspend the Armature Rugby 2020 season. BRC managed to play only one league game against our neighbours East Rand United. The next scheduled game was against Benoni Rugby Club, but it was cancelled less than 24 hours before kick-off. We surely missed out on some revenue as this was a home game and all expenses have been committed to hosting the game.

“The club then competed in the Makopano Covid Memorial Cup for all the legends they lost.

“Credit should be given to the initiative that was taken by our first team coach Lukas van der Schyff and the head coach of Springs Rugby Club, Ockert Brits.”
Springs Rugby Club, Witbank Rugby Club and Elsburg Rugby Club were also part of the Memorial Cup.

Furthermore, a new committee was announced at the AGM.
The committee includes Travis Howel (first team manager), Tiffany Thorpe (facilities manager), Charmain Boertjie Wessels (secretary), Danie Spider Schultz (club captain), Renier Mostert (vice-chairperson), Rinus van der Linden (chairperson), Hendrik Bartho Wessels (Covid-19 control), Andre Boom de Klerk, Lex Thorpe (president).
