Watch: Gallons of sewage spill into road, wetland

It’s not yet confirmed what caused the problem and when the sewage started spilling out, but it seems to be going on for weeks.

The major sewage spill on Solomon Street in Lilianton is a cause for concern as it floods the road before making its way into the nearby wetland.

Cars driving along the stretch of road were seen slowing down as they tried to avoid hitting the flood of sewage on the southbound lane.

To make matters worse, motorists are now forced to contend with the potholes hidden by puddles of dark sewage.

The Advertiser reported the matter to the Ekurhuleni’s call centre, and it’s unclear whether the metro was made aware of the problem prior to our call.

This publication has also emailed an inquiry to the metro on whether authorities will urgently send out its team to carry out repairs and conduct intensive disinfecting of the excess raw sewage, which has already covered parts of the road, causing an unpleasant odour and pollution of the wetland.

Solomon Street used as dumping ground

The area has also been turned into a dump site for all sorts of wastes, reportedly by both people from local residential areas and businesses, including construction companies.

The area has mounds of illegal dumping, from household waste to industrial waste, including disposable diapers, plastics, animal carcasses, tyres, building rubble and other waste.

An Ekurhuleni metro official confirmed that they were aware of the problem, saying their team has been since attending to the situation.
