Taxi boss in critical condition after shooting
Gunmen open fire on victim on busy Brakpan road.
A man in his 40s was shot multiple times this morning (Tuesday) in what police confirmed to be taxi-related violence.
Gunmen opened fire on the taxi boss along Prince George Avenue in Brenthurst at around 06:10.
According to Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Captain Pearl van Staad, the victim was accompanied by a 38-year-old man.
They were travelling in a blue Toyota Yaris.
“The man was asked by the victim to give him a lift to Brakpan. He didn’t say exactly where he wanted to go,” she said.
“They stopped at a garage to withdraw money. The victim withdrew R3 000.
“They then drove towards Brakpan. While driving, a vehicle came behind them and the occupants tried to pull them over.
“The occupants in the vehicle started shooting at them.
“At the traffic lights, the man tried to go past two stationary cars but collided with them.
“The victim was shot five or six times and was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital in a critical condition.”
The victim’s companion injured his nose during the collision but was otherwise unharmed.
“It is unknown what happened to the cash,” said Van Staad.
“There were about 25 cartridges found on the scene.”
She added the perpetrators, who were armed with an AK47 and an R5 rifle, were travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz.
A case of attempted murder has been opened.
